Things to Remember when Coaching

There are a number of basic things that you need to remember when coaching people:

Learn to pull, not push

Nowadays, a lot of managers and supervisors think that managing people is basically telling people what to do! Management think that by only giving employees explicit instructions and treating them like animals that it will make people work. This is not the case and never should be because if you treat people like animals then they will ultimately behave like one. It will also cause them to become demotivated. The people that are the best at managing others are the people who spend time coaching others or pulling them towards their goals and involving them in making decisions in the kind of work that they should be doing.

Believe in Coaching

You need to believe yourself that coaching is extremely important because if you do not then the people you are coaching will not take it very seriously because you dont!

Show others respect for their own values

You need to remember that although you want to succeed in your career and have more responsibilities others may not. People in the workplace differ in what they value in life so you will just have to respect these differences.

Patience

You need to be aware that different people progress at different times and may take longer to understand some things so do not get frustrated with them. You need to be extremely patient and do not rush them because this will dent their confidence.

Good judgement at all times

If your common sense tells you that an approach is not working with someone then try something else.
